HE the GCCSG Welcomes UN Security Council Resolution 2720 which Aims to Provide Further Aid to the Gaza Strip

His Excellency Mr Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi, Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), welcomed the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2720 on Friday, December 22, 2023. He expressed his hope that this resolution would contribute to alleviating the suffering of the people in the Gaza Strip and facilitate the delivery of further aid.

Furthermore, he commended the effective diplomatic efforts of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and its significant role in presenting the resolution to the Security Council.

He emphasised that this resolution, which calls for urgent steps to allow for the safe and expanded delivery of humanitarian assistance to Gaza, the establishment of conditions for a sustainable cessation of hostilities, the appointment of a humanitarian affairs coordinator and reconstruction in Gaza, and other provisions, is an important decision that will provide a secure environment for the residents of the Gaza Strip and create the necessary conditions for an immediate and sustainable ceasefire.

Moreover, he called on Israel to swiftly implement this resolution and adhere to all United Nations resolutions and the requirements of international humanitarian law by ceasing the targeting of civilians and civilian infrastructure in Gaza, including hospitals, schools, shelters, and camps.

He also urged the international community and the Security Council, in particular, to assume their responsibilities in imposing an immediate ceasefire and protecting the population of Gaza from Israeli attacks, which have resulted in the martyrdom of over twenty thousand Palestinians and the injury of tens of thousands of civilians, predominantly children and women
